The extraordinary Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov has returned to the San Francisco Symphony for a varied season-long residency. Last night, he thrilled the audience with a duo recital of Schumann, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, and a new work by Mauro Lanza. His co-conspirator: his teacher and mentor Sergei Babayan.
Trifonov and Babayan played one encore this evening: Rimsky-Korsakov (arr. Vronsky/Babin) / Dance of the Tumblers from The Snow Maiden. The audience erupted in applause.
Trifonov performs Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony on June 21-23.
