Restoring the Western Flyer Event in SF

The Proteus Forum hosts a benefit event for the educational programs of the Western Flyer Foundation, the non-profit organization restoring The Western Flyer, the historic purse seiner fishing boat that took John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts to the Gulf of California in 1940.

Documenting that voyage was the 1941 book Sea of Cortez, a work that brought ecology to the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

The Forum is hosting Sherry Flumerfelt as she details the restoration of this historic boat and outlines the future use of The Western Flyer for scientific research and for teaching children about our sublime—but vulnerable Pacific Ocean.

The presentation will start at 7:30, but come after 6:00 to enjoy the hospitality of SF Elks Lodge #3 and a dj set of surf rock music by The Phantom Surfer’s ripping guitarist Johnny Barlett.

The lodge is located on the 3rd floor of the Kensington Park Hotel building at 450 Post St., one block from Union Square.

All those fascinated by the incredible journey of John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts memorialized in their Sea of Cortez (Arion Press publication #118) are invited to an evening lecture in San Francisco on March 27th by Sherry Flumerfelt, executive director of the Western Flyer Foundation.

At the event, a benefit with music to support restoration of the historic boat, Flumerfelt will outline its future use for scientific research and ocean education.
