Shipyard Holiday Art Show Pays Tribute to Day of Infamy

Coinciding this year with the Shipyard Holiday Art Show, we remember the day that changed the history of Bayview Hunters Point, when thousands of Black families moved here from the South to find work at the Shipyard, which the U.S. Navy had taken over just five days after the attack.

Eventually the Shipyard became the place where critical parts of the first nuclear bomb, Little Boy, were prepared and loaded onto the cruiser USS Indianapolis, headed for Japan. In the aftermath, the Shipyard became a center of learning about the fallout from nuclear warfare.

Today the U.S. Navy is moving into the final phases of cleaning up the site and addressing the legacy of those decades of work, to clear the way for future development.

Learn more about the legacy of this work and Shipyard history at the display outside the Shipyard Gallery or by visiting Stacey Carter’s studio.
